MCP Compatibility Is Only the Start of the Contract

6 movers3 research signals1 risk8 min read

🧭 Today's Thesis

An agent integration is now defined as much by selection, admission, lifecycle, and authority as by the protocol spoken on the wire. Pi 0.99.2 defers non-direct MCP servers until a tool is searched or named, Figma admits only catalog-listed clients to its hosted server, and MCP Events adds subscriptions, signatures, retries, expiry, refresh, and revocation. A Node/React/Postgres team therefore needs an integration contract that records which client may connect, how tools are selected, which identity and database role authorize each effect, how asynchronous work stops, and which receipt proves the terminal result.

The protocol remains useful connective tissue. It just cannot answer the product questions around it. A successful handshake does not establish service admission, least privilege, safe schema drift, current state, cancellation, or accepted work.

🎯 What Matters to Us This Week

  • Treat the client, server, and service policy as one dependency. Figma's hosted endpoint demonstrates that implementing MCP does not guarantee admission, while the official .NET MCP package demonstrates broad distribution without proving any particular server safe. Pin the client, server, protocol version, admission policy, granted account, and exact tools together.

  • Move tool discovery out of the always-loaded prompt, but keep authority separate. Pi's current release makes deferred search a normal coding-agent behavior. That can reduce context churn, but ranking a tool as relevant is not permission to call it; the selected tool still needs an application-owned caller, target, argument, and consequence check.

  • Asynchronous tools need a revocable lifecycle, not merely a webhook. MCP Events documents callback verification, signed delivery, duplicate handling, replay, expiry, refresh, unsubscribe, and access-revocation tests. For an app team, subscription identity and resource authorization belong next to the job record in ordinary durable state.

  • Database credentials remain the hard boundary. GitHub's reviewed MySQL MCP Server advisory says SSE mode before 0.4.2 could expose unauthenticated SQL execution because Origin and Host validation were absent. The transport patch matters; a read-only database role, local binding, authenticated transport, and an effect receipt matter more.

  • Review capacity remains the economic constraint. A direct EngineeringManagers report describes growing PR queues, incidents, low-quality changes, and weak cost visibility. It is one practitioner report rather than representative demand, but it matches the week's research: evaluate the complete system on accepted work and reviewer reconstruction.

πŸ”₯ Top Movers

Values below are explicit GitHub daily-window observations; weekly and monthly windows remain separate.

  • Panniantong/Agent-Reach (1,696 ⭐ today, 89,785 total) β€” a new clean peak for cross-platform discovery; every factual use still needs a direct URL and deterministic hydration.
  • DietrichGebert/ponytail (1,281 ⭐ today, 153,377 total) β€” deletion-first guidance remains visible, with an existing measurement warning blocking a new trend call.
  • affaan-m/ECC (897 ⭐ today, 272,232 total) β€” broad agent-harness guidance stayed near its verified peak; exact bundle identity and protected cases remain the adoption gate.
  • mattpocock/skills (751 ⭐ today, 275,353 total) β€” reusable engineering behavior continues to spread, but the board-versus-total warning remains.
  • pbakaus/impeccable (699 ⭐ today, 75,286 total) β€” installable design language held near its 722/day peak.
  • mvschwarz/openrig (517 ⭐ today, 4,674 total) β€” heterogeneous agent teams stayed active below their 737/day peak.

πŸš€ What Changed the Frontier

  • Tool selection became a runtime subsystem. Pi now keeps deferred MCP tools out of the stable description and connects non-direct servers only when search or a named namespace requires them. That reduces prompt coupling while making search quality and namespace identity explicit dependencies.
  • Event subscriptions became governed agent inputs. MCP Events gives external changes a specified route into a chat, including signatures, retries, expiration, replay, unsubscribe, and access-loss behavior.
  • Hosted MCP acquired an admission layer. Figma's catalog requirement separates protocol compatibility from service availability; procurement and testing must include the actual allowed client and account.
  • Harness choice remained a measured interaction. Finding the Right Fit reports model-ranking reversals across 66 model-harness configurations. A model name without the harness, task, runtime contract, and acceptance set is an incomplete result.

πŸ†• First Appearances

  • No new on-lens repository earned a registry entry today. The strongest GitHub movements were repeated, window-labelled observations for existing tools and skill ecosystems. Search-only and unrelated first appearances were not promoted to fill the section.

🌱 Rising Stars

(only repeated, window-labelled daily observations are used; measurement warnings remain visible)

  • Panniantong/Agent-Reach β€” rose from a 960/day verified peak to 1,696/day. Treat it as discovery infrastructure, not a source of record.
  • google/skills β€” reached a new clean 230/day peak. First-party packaging strengthens the skills distribution pattern but does not prove task lift or safe installed behavior.
  • pbakaus/impeccable β€” held 699/day against a 722/day peak after three clean observations. The next evidence should come from one design-system-constrained React task.
  • mvschwarz/openrig β€” held 517/day against a 737/day peak. Test owner/checker disagreement and reviewer cost before adding more persistent workers.

πŸ“‰ Fading

(repos whose explicit daily velocity dropped more than 80% from a verified daily peak)

  • heygen-com/hyperframes β€” 499/day versus a 2,627/day peak. The HTML-to-video abstraction remains useful, but attention has cooled below the clean fading threshold.
  • max-sixty/worktrunk β€” 64/day versus a 366/day peak. Worktree isolation is still a practical primitive; the attention cycle no longer justifies treating it as this week's frontier.

βš”οΈ Battles (same category, competing)

  • Deferred tool search vs always-loaded catalogs β€” Pi 0.99.2 makes server and tool discovery lazy; direct tool exposure keeps a small critical surface immediately visible. Use deferred search for broad catalogs, direct exposure for a tiny protected set, and keep authorization outside both ranking paths.
  • RugSnare vs one-time MCP scanning β€” both inspect tool contracts, but RugSnare focuses on post-approval description/schema drift and bounded replay. Its reported corpus results are maintainer claims until independently reproduced.

πŸ”¬ From Research

πŸ”„ What's Changing

The connective layer is maturing while responsibility moves outward. Protocol packages, hosted servers, deferred discovery, and event subscriptions make integrations easier to assemble, but they also expose the seams that a protocol cannot own: client admission, account identity, schema provenance, ranking, credential custody, idempotency, cancellation, retention, revocation, and acceptance. The practical design is a small application-owned contract around commodity protocol plumbing.

This does not imply every app team should build a gateway or agent platform. Buy the transport, client, sandbox, and scheduler where they remove work; own the policy and evidence that express the product's consequences.

πŸ§ͺ One Experiment Worth Running

Write one end-to-end MCP integration receipt. Proposed small step: choose one read-only Postgres inspection through a single MCP server. Record the exact client and server versions, discovered tool schema, selected account, read-only role, permitted host, arguments, result hash, cancellation behavior, and final acceptance check; then change the tool description or revoke the account and repeat. This can reveal whether drift and revocation fail closed for one path. It cannot establish general MCP security, so a broader event or write-action test should wait for a clean result.

⚠️ One Risk to Track

A compatible connection is mistaken for durable authority. The client may be admitted today and removed tomorrow; a deferred tool may resolve to a changed schema; an event subscription may outlive resource access; or a database server may authenticate transport while using an over-privileged role. Watch for unpinned schemas, catalog-policy changes, stale subscriptions, missing account IDs, duplicate effects, and receipts that cannot name the exact tool version.

πŸ™… One Thing to Ignore

β€œMCP-compatible” as a standalone adoption criterion. Compatibility says little about client admission, tool selection, credentials, effect policy, drift, revocation, recovery, or accepted outcomes. Revisit a server only when it exposes the exact workload value and can be pinned, least-privileged, cancelled, audited, and removed within the application's own contract.

πŸ’‘ Surprise Pick

RugSnare β€” a small tool-contract drift gate is more aligned with today's evidence than another broad agent platform. Try its read-only diff on one pinned local server; do not enable write replay or accept its benchmark claims without independent reproduction.

πŸ“Š Supply vs. Demand

What's being built (supply) What people want (demand) Match?
Deferred MCP discovery and namespace search Keep large tool catalogs from consuming context while retaining predictable critical tools Partial β€” ranking improves context, not authority
Hosted catalog-gated MCP services Reliable cross-client interoperability Partial β€” admission remains vendor policy
Event subscriptions with signatures, replay, and expiry Durable automation that stops when access changes Strong specification; operating evidence remains early
Agent sandboxes such as OpenShell 0.1.2 One-command, one-folder isolation without broad host access Partial β€” alpha runtime and setup burden remain
Coding-agent skill and harness packs More output with less review load Weak β€” the observed review-wall report says acceptance is still the bottleneck
